I stand before you today with a heavy heart, sharing a story that is deeply personal to me. For three long years, I poured my heart and soul into building my dream—a to-go and pick-up restaurant that would not only serve delicious food but also expand my catering services. My pride and joy, my food trailer, was crafted over four months, with every detail carefully selected to reflect my passion and dedication. I envisioned it not only as a business asset but as a symbol of my dreams coming to life.
After weeks of preparation, we launched our food truck on September 1st at Will Rogers Beach, surrounded by great weather, supportive friends, and the hope of a bright future. That day was a culmination of my hard work, yet amidst the joy, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, needing time to collect myself and ensure everything was in order. So I took a week to gather my thoughts and readied myself and my team to go out again on Saturday, September 7th.
Then, on the morning of September 7th, 2024, tragedy struck. At 5:15 AM, a man in his late 30’s stole my food truck right from in front of my business. He took his time, even leaving for 14 minutes to gather tools before driving away with what I had spent years building. This wasn’t just a truck; it was my life’s work and a means to support myself, my employees and their families.
Despite my efforts to protect this investment—having insurance, health department approvals, and proper installations—the LAPD's slow response left me feeling helpless. Just days later, I received a call from a gas station nearly 225 miles away, informing me that my stolen truck had been used in another theft. I was heartbroken. The police report and evidence didn’t matter; my new insurance policy only having been 6 days old—wouldn’t cover the loss. I was left feeling hopeless.
I never imagined I would have to reach out for help, but the love and concern of friends and family have encouraged me to share my plight with you. This loss isn’t just about the truck; it’s about the income that would have supported my staff and their families. Without the truck, we are facing an uncertain future.
Rebuilding will cost over $30,000 and take three months—a daunting challenge that feels insurmountable right now. But I am trying to raise $20,000 to just start the rebuild and while doing so provide for myself, my business and my employees. I understand that we all face our own struggles, but if you find it in your heart to help, even the smallest contribution can make a difference. If a donation isn’t possible, your prayers and positive thoughts mean the world to me.
Thank you for taking the time to hear my story. I am open and vulnerable at this moment, but I believe this is not the end. Together, we can turn this story around.
With gratitude,
Chef Kevin
