Hello, world! My name is bell hooks -- I'm a schnauzer-terrier mix from Korea, but now I'm living in Brooklyn and I couldn't be happier. That's because I have the best family in the world. Even though I love my mom very much, she's a bit of a spazz and gets easily overwhelmed, so I'm lucky to be co-parented by my Auntie and her partner, Chef. We call him Chef because he used to work in a kitchen before the virus shut down his restaurant. Now, Chef does all the cooking and cleaning in our home, and it's a good thing, too, because Mom is bad at housework. The truth is, Uncle Chef is my favorite person in the whole world. For breakfast, he chops up apples for me and seasons them with basil; when I'm constipated, he boils sweet potatoes, which are my favorite and help me poop. All day long, he watches YouTube videos so he can nag my mom later about the nuances of my interior life. That's probably why he's the only one who gets me. When Mom is busy with her nose in a book, Chef plays with me and takes me on walks. And even though he's out of work and doesn't have any money right now, he never leaves the house without stopping by the pet shop to bring home some organic treats for me, and he always remembers to bring my mom her favorite snacks, too.
And because Chef is always doing so much for everyone else, I thought it would be nice if I could do something nice for him! Uninsured and undocumented, Chef has unfortunately been living without dental care for many, many years. He has a mouth full of cavities that cause him a lot of pain and make him ashamed of his smile. It will cost about $10,000 to extract his bad teeth and replace them with implants. My family has been struggling to make ends meet since the virus hit, and dental work is a bit of a luxury for us at the moment. That's where you come in!
