Hi everybody I’m Chawn Wilson Jr. I’m a 20 year old college student athlete(sophomore) from Chicago, Illinois. For those of you who don’t know, towards the end my senior year of high school as a 3 sport athlete, going to Texas A&M for football, I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome(GBS). Which would hospitalize me for a month. GBS is a rapid-onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system. Typically, both sides of the body are involved, and the initial symptoms are changes in sensation or pain often in the back along with muscle weakness, beginning in the feet and hands, often spreading to the arms and upper body. The symptoms may develop over hours to a few weeks. During the acute phase, the disorder can be life-threatening, with about 15% of people developing weakness of the breathing muscles and, therefore, requiring mechanical ventilation. Some are affected by changes in the function of the autonomic nervous system, which can lead to dangerous abnormalities in heart rate and blood pressure. I went through physical therapy for about 2 months to learn to walk and function fully all over again. When I returned to school I had a ton to catch up on. My first week back we then were told to go home and school would be virtual due to covid. With missing all the work, only portions were excused. My GPA dropped and because of physical ability I could no longer attend Texas A&M to play football. I then committed to Kentucky State University to walk on to football, but because of my GPA I was in the excel program and ineligible. While, also having to go through Covid protocols for schooling and my father having to pay out of pocket for my education. After freshman year I was passing but my grades weren’t the best. Going into my sophomore year, first semester my grades were better and I was possibly able to get financial aid if my second semester went even better. But God had other plans, after thanksgiving of 2021 my Father , Chawn Wilson, Sr a diabetic 49 years of age had contracted Covid. He was hospitalized for about 3 weeks and later died on Christmas morning due to the complications. While having to figure out life and what my next steps were I couldn’t return to college because I had no way of paying for it. It’s only been 4 months since my life has completely changed. My plan is to pay this fee off and get back into school and get back on the football field. My dad and I both always had the dream of graduating college and going to the NFL and I still have that dream. I just need help to try to get to that point. I can’t get my transcripts or get back in to any school until I pay for it. So if you give I really appreciate your love and for giving me more of a chance to chase my dreams. But even if you can’t give, I ask that you will pray for me that I have direction and that God will open doors. As I will pray for you also. THANK YOU!!
