My father, Charlie a young 68 years old -born in New York and moved to Florida back in 1986.
He’s a husband. A father. A grandfather to 6 grandsons. He’s an uncle and friend to
many. The type of guy that would give you the shirt off his back before you even realize you’re in need.
He’s well known in his community. Since his retirement in 2012, he’s been a loyal volunteer, both at Bayonet Point Hospital and Pasco County Sheriff’s Department as CSU Deputy.
He has cancer.
It started back in May of ‘23. He realized something was wrong when the lymph nodes in his neck swole to the point of limited mobility. Quickly. Diagnosis: Edeno-carcinoma AKA cancer of his salivary glands. A very specific, very RARE cancer. the cause? Ironically the medical device prescribed for his sleep apnea was the culprit. His CPAP that was recalled ‘same year’.
A class one recall; which is as severe as it gets. A recall that was started by Phillips back in 2015 but tried to keep low profile until they couldn’t any longer.
September 27, 2023 he underwent a ‘Left Neck Dissection’ which was absolutely as brutal as it sounds. They removed all his salivary glands on the left side - all cancerous, a cluster of 60 lymph nodes - 24 of which were also cancerous, as well as his left carotid artery.
Surgery, chemo and radiation went great and he was in remission. For five minutes.
June/July brought around his regular PET scan. They discovered cancer had once again reared its ugly head again, this time in his spine. More specifically, T6 & T7. Seven hour long chemo infusions every 21 days in addition to other cocktails brings us to present day.
This past Friday, he was brought to the hospital via ambulance. He’d had a cluster of 4 back to back seizures. The hospital discovered that the cancer metastasized yet again. Near his hip, his shoulder and his brain. The tumors had swelled, causing pressure, which triggered the seizures.
The hospital wanted to do emergency surgery. His personal oncologist disagreed and wants to do 3 rounds of radiation to each tumor and of course another chemo cocktail.
With 2 very drastically differing courses of treatment - we feel it’s safest to get a second opinion and treatment at Moffitt Cancer Center here in Tampa. Here’s the obstacle. His insurance (Medicare) is out-of-network and he’s responsible for 40% out of pocket.
I’m asking for his community that he selflessly pours into daily to reciprocate that support now that he’s in need. It’s time for our ‘village’ to gather around both financially and with morale support and help him get through this next chapter victoriously.
