Hi, my name is Laurie Nakama, and I’m raising funds for my dear friend, Chara Hoe.

Chara is not only a courageous leader in Hawaiʻi’s construction world, but a steadfast and deeply loyal friend—someone who would do anything for anyone. She shows up, works hard, gives generously, and has spent years quietly supporting others across Kauaʻi.

Last fall, Chara was diagnosed with breast cancer. After recently undergoing a double mastectomy, she has now learned that she will likely need radiation and possibly chemotherapy as well. While she is facing this journey with strength and determination, the financial realities are heavy.

Chara and her wife, Nadine, are self-employed general contractors who work side by side in their own business. During treatment and recovery, they are facing the loss of their household income. On top of that, Chara must frequently travel from Kauaʻi to Oʻahu for medical care, and many of those travel expenses—especially for Nadine to accompany her—are not covered by insurance.

So many of us know Chara through the countless ways she has supported this community. Over the years, you may have seen her working long hours at local farmers markets helping friends launch small businesses, building beloved bakeries and coffee shops, or partnering closely with nonprofits across the island. You may also know her through one of her favorite joys—playing mahjong—where she brings together different circles of friends with laughter and connection.

And if you’ve driven through Lāwaʻi, you’ve almost certainly seen the iconic skellies on the rooftop, dressed for every season and holiday. What many don’t know is that Chara is the heart, the creativity, the funding, and the hard work behind keeping those skellies alive—year after year—bringing joy to the entire community.

Chara has spent her life lifting others up. Now, as her wide and loving circle of friends across Kauaʻi comes together, we want to lift her up in return.

Funds raised will help cover medical expenses, travel for treatment, and everyday living costs while Chara focuses on healing. Any amount helps, and if you’re unable to donate, sharing this page means just as much.
