My late mother, Sabar Gul, believed that no child—girl or boy—should be denied an education because of where they were born.

Even during years of war, she helped children including her own, continue learning. I was one of them. The opportunities she gave me took me from our remote village in central Afghanistan to the London School of Economics.

She wanted other children in her village to have the same chance. A few years ago she donated our family land for a school in her village, where children had been studying in makeshift tents through freezing winters and scorching summers.

In recent months families in this village with very little contributed whatever they could to begin construction. Some even donated chickens or goats that helped sustain their livelihoods. But the funds are now running out, the school remains under construction and the community has nothing more to give.

My mother sadly passed away in July 2026 without seeing these children learning in a proper classroom. I cannot bring her back, but together we can finish what she started.

Every donation—£5, £10, £50 or more—will bring these children closer to entering a proper classroom for the first time.
