Help Chan (15) Heal, Victim of Hit & Run

Donation protected
On a Friday evening, Chan was riding his bike home when a car hit him and knocked him unconscious. The driver left him bleeding on the street, a serious felony under the law. Chan suffered a broken leg and severe brain swelling. Chan just turned 15 years old. The criminals remain at large, although police are investigating.

I am Chan’s sister. I set up this page for those who would like to help support Chan, ease the potential financial burden on my family, and help bring some semblance of justice for my family for this heartless crime.

My brother was born in a refugee camp. Due to ethnic cleansing, our family fled Myanmar when Chan was a toddler. Since 2009, we have called Chapel Hill, North Carolina our home.

Chan lives in low-income government housing with my parents and my two younger siblings. We do not have much. Still, Chan has always understood financial responsibility; whenever he wants something, he makes sure to earn it. He aspires to become a businessman.

My brother attends East Chapel Hill High School as a ninth grader, and he has many friends. Chan is smart and respectful. He enjoys playing video games, riding his bike, building computers, and recently, writing and producing music.

On the evening of Friday, December 17, Chan rode his bike back home from a local skatepark. My brother had never been in an accident, so he was not concerned about wearing reflective gear or hurting himself. Around 7:30 PM, a car hit him and left him on the cold street. He lied still, unconscious and severely concussed. He was bleeding from his head and his right leg.

We do not know how long he lied there. My family found out when the police reported the incident and EMT had arrived. We were in disbelief, devastated, and worried. Afterwards, Chan was in critical condition. He had surgery to relieve severe brain swelling and bleeding. He’s also had surgery for a fracture on his tibia. After three weeks of sedation in Intensive Care, he stabilized.

Yet, my brother remains unresponsive and unable to speak or move. Because he cannot use his mouth yet, he has had surgery to provide food through his stomach. He has had another surgery because of continued brain swelling and bleeding. In a couple weeks, my brother will be transferred to Charlotte, NC to undergo intensive physical therapy. This is all we know so far. My older brother plans to leave his job as a mechanic to stay with Chan during this next stage. Doctors will not tell us what his recovery will look like or how much it will cost; right now, all we can do is pray he will regain his basic motor skills in the coming months or years.

Chan’s future is unknown, so we cannot predict the direct and indirect expenses related to his successful recovery. Due to the pandemic, my mother’s been laid off; my father cannot work due to old age. Your contribution will go a long way in helping Chan heal and supporting my family through this uncertain and difficult time. We aim to raise enough funds to reasonably cover the next few years and provide some semblance of relief for my family for the crime against my brother.
