Hello everyone,

My name is America Cortez Herrera, and I am starting this GoFundMe for the benefit of my younger sister, Celeste Cortez Herrera. Between late January and mid February 2026, our family received devastating news that a 5.5 cm nodule on Celeste's neck was confirmed to be papillary thyroid carcinoma (Bethesda category 5). Of course, we feared the worst, as would anyone who hears the word cancer. However, we have begun the process as a family for Celeste to receive the medical care she needs, and are remaining positive and strong for her sake.

Unfortunately, we are also beginning to understand the financial strains that many people with urgent health issues experience under this country's capitalist medical industry. Costs from the biopsy procedure, consultation fees with the endocrinologist, and other financial costs are beginning to add up. We are asking for aid in assisting Celeste with these needs as she fights and recovers from this evil disease. I do not believe it is necessary to describe who she is as a person, as anyone who requires aid should deserve it regardless of their achievements or merits in life. Many of you that will see this will know that this is something you learn from her. Celeste is sensitive, kindhearted, strong, a hard worker, and always fights for those in need. She is heavily involved with her community at UCSB and Inglewood. Celeste is also expected to graduate with a Bachelor's in Sociology, and a double minor in Chicano & Chicana studies and Educational studies, by June, with ambitions to apply for graduate school and to obtain a master's and teaching credential in Social Sciences. Celeste and our family would be extremely grateful to anyone who is able to support, and appreciate those who have already reached out. Thank you.

Me llamo América Cortez Herrera y estoy iniciando esta campaña de GoFundMe para mi hermana, Celeste Cortez Herrera. Entre finales de Enero y mediados de Febrero 2026, nuestra familia recibió noticias de que un nódulo de 5.5 cm en el cuello de Celeste se había confirmado como carcinoma papilar de tiroides (categoría 5 de Bethesda). Por supuesto, pensamos lo peor, como cualquier persona que escucha la palabra cáncer. Sin embargo, hemos iniciado el proceso como familia para que Celeste consiga la atención médica que necesita y mantener pensamientos positivos y fuertes por su bien.

Desafortunadamente, también estamos empezando a comprender las necesidades financieras que muchas personas con problemas de salud urgentes experimentan bajo la industria médica capitalista de este país. Los costos de la biopsia, las consultas con el endocrinólogo y otros gastos financieros están empezando a acumularse. Solicitamos ayuda para ayudar a Celeste con estas necesidades mientras lucha y se recupera de esta terrible enfermedad. No creo que sea necesario describirla, cualquier persona que necesite ayuda debería merecerla, independientemente de sus logros o méritos en la vida.
