Cedar is our gentle, loving three-year-old Silken Windhound who has brought so much joy to our family since last November. He’s the son of Lily, our ten-year-old Silken Windhound, and together they fill our home with energy and affection. Cedar loves to run, snuggle, and chase critters in the yard, always rolling over for belly pets and sharing his sweet nature with everyone he meets. He’s helped heal our hearts after the loss of his grandfather, Yeager, and quickly became an irreplaceable part of our lives.
Last night, Cedar was seriously injured by a groundhog in our yard. In a split second, the groundhog bit through his neck, causing severe bleeding from his jugular and possibly his carotid. Ian drove us to the emergency vet hospital while I sat with Cedar, keeping pressure on his wound the entire way. We acted fast, and Cedar was brave and calm, letting me care for him throughout the drive. At the hospital, the veterinary team shaved around the wound and put a compression bandage on his neck. They found two puncture wounds but aren't sure yet about the extent of the damage inside. Cedar is being closely monitored, and there is hope he may clot on his own if it’s just his jugular. We are still waiting for more answers and won’t know the next steps until the middle of the day. We were scared up until the vets and technicians at Blue Pearl hospital stabilized him, and for that we are so grateful. They have been wonderful, and this is our third major expense there within the last year. The initial estimate for Cedar’s care is $4000–$6000. At this point, we are fairly certain that Cedar is ok and not at risk of losing his life. While the vet can't guarantee anything, we are optimistic and our main concern is the stress of everything, not the fear of losing him.
Vet bills have been devastating for us over the last ten months. When Yeager needed a hospital stay and diagnostics, it took us months to pay off the costs. Just last month, Lily contracted a GI infection and needed a day in the hospital, which added even more to our financial strain. We are just getting hammered with medical bills left and right, and we’ve incurred some major medical debt ourselves this past year. As small business owners, we pay our entire health insurance premium, but it still leaves us with many thousands in medical debt from the last year. Cedar’s emergency comes at a time when we’re stretched thin. Lily, his mom, is anxious and worried, and our whole family is feeling the stress. Witnessing so many stories of people acting quickly in crisis has helped me stay calm and respond when Cedar needed me most. I feel uncomfortable asking for help and would prefer to cover these costs privately, but we simply are stretched too thin right now. We haven’t needed to ask for help since my brother’s sudden passing ten years ago, but right now, we’re reaching out to our community for support. Any help you can offer will go directly to Cedar’s medical care and recovery. If we are fortunate enough to receive extra support, it will be used to secure a pet insurance policy for Cedar and Lily, something we’ve wanted to do but haven’t been able to afford. We are deeply grateful for your kindness during this difficult time.
Lily’s tenth birthday is on Wednesday and mine is on Saturday. We were hoping to have a dorky birthday party for her with little dog hats and cupcakes, and all we want is for Cedar to be home so we can focus on some happy, positive things together as a family. We are looking forward to having our sweet boy back home so we can focus on making some happy memories.
