Catarina is my beloved family member, and she was recently detained by ICE. She was taken away from her two young children a toddler and a little girl. Catarina came to the United States hoping for a better future. Now, her children are confused and scared, not understanding why their mother is suddenly gone. I am doing my best to care for them, Catarina has a court date with the judge in early February and we urgently need to raise money for a lawyer who can intervene before that date and help her navigate this difficult process. She does not speak English and is struggling to understand what is happening to her. Communication is also a challenge—she cannot make calls without money, and she desperately wants to hear from her children, and FaceTime her children and know they are safe. What makes this even more difficult is that, while the facility has essential items like toothpaste and a toothbrush, they only sell them to detainees who have money. It is heartbreaking and, frankly, ridiculous that people like Catarina are taken away suddenly with no resources and are then expected to buy basic necessities while trying to cope with this situation.
