Help Cassie beat a brain tumor
After months of doctor visits to figure out why she was having such frequent and severe headaches, my sister Cassie was finally approved for an MRI. On Dec. 8th, 2025, they found a large 3.2cm “functioning” Pituitary Macroadenoma. The tumor, which is roughly the size of a golf ball, is growing off the pituitary gland into the open sinus cavity, onto the right optic nerve, and is fully encasing both carotid arteries.
Though the tumor is benign/non-cancerous, it is “functioning,” which means it’s producing hormones. This particular tumor is producing dangerously high levels of IGF-1, or growth hormone, which if left untreated, can cause potentially fatal enlargement of the heart.
Cassie’s first brain surgery is scheduled for 4/10/2026 at UC Health’s Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. Surgeons will remove as much as they can; however, due to the size and structure of the tumor, and the fact it’s encasing carotids, they will not be able to remove all of it. A second surgery will need to be done within the year with radiation treatments in between.
Recovery from the initial surgery on 4/10 will put Cassie out of work for about 6 weeks. However, due to the long-term need for radiation and another surgery, it is likely Cassie won’t be able to work full-time for the better part of the year. Though Medicaid is covering most medical costs (for now), this means a significant loss of income for a long period of time. If you know Cassie, you know she hates to ask for help.
Any amount, big or small, is greatly appreciated.
