Hello! I'm a current 17 year-old high school senior of Mexican descent who was recently accepted into the Brown|RISD Dual Degree (BRDD) program, which has been the college of my dreams for the past few years. Going there would allow me to pursue degrees both in neuroscience –at Brown, an Ivy League school in Rhode Island– and painting –at the Rhode Island School of Design, one of the best art schools in the country and right near Brown– over a 5-year span, and in this way study what I'm most passionate about.
I’ve worked extremely hard to get to this point and I'm incredibly excited at the prospect of attending one of the most selective academic programs in the country. I've taken the most difficult classes available to me at my high school, gotten a 3.97 GPA, taken extra courses in neuroscience, psychology, animation, and ASL at Santa Monica College during the school year, participated in many extracurriculars, etc. It's been challenging but I've loved it, especially as it has been in service of achieving this larger goal.
Eventually I hope to conduct research in neuroscience to better understand cognition, consciousness, and the connections made in the brain when analyzing art. I know that this program is how I can fully achieve this. Here is the essay I wrote in my application to the dual degree program, just to show more specifically what could come from my years there: BRDD Essay .
However, the BRDD program is very expensive and, although I know my family will do whatever they can to get me there, I'm hoping that people in the community might be able to help us lighten the load. Of course, I'm pursuing outside scholarships too, but I know those won't be able to cover everything. I would greatly appreciate anything that you're able to contribute. Any donation will put me a step closer to this dream school, so thank you. I promise I will do everything in my power to deserve your invaluable support and use my education to contribute to making our world a better place.
I have several animations and paintings below, if you'd like to see any of my current work. I've also attached (at the top) the 2-minute video I put in my application to Brown explaining why their school is so important to me, and (at the very bottom) a taste of my formative years as a concert pianist. Once again, I'm extremely grateful to you all!
Sincerely yours,
Cassandra Carrasco
