Hi all,
My sister (Naz) loves her dogs more than anything. Kaiser, Casper, Casey and Kira are her whole world. She spends hours every week home cooking their meals and she brings them to their vet for a bloodwork & wellness checkup bi-annually to make sure they're well. She tried her best to keep them as healthy and safe as possible because they are truly her babies. She would do anything and everything for them. Despite all that...
On the night of September 16th, Casper began having seizures. Luckily, Naz was there when it started so he was rushed to the emergency vet at Long Island Vet Specialist. In the span of 30 minutes, he already had 4 seizures. An MRI confirmed that he has a tumor on his right forebrain that is non-resectable. When he was finally brought home on September 18th, he had to be rushed back to the emergency vet at 2am Sunday because of 4 more seizures. He stayed for another two nights while they adjusted his seizure medications again. He is now currently on two anti-seizure medications and steroids to hopefully control the seizures. According to his neurologist, it is most likely meningioma based on the results of the spinal tap. His best treatment option is radiation. Of course Naz has decided to pursue the radiation treatment, no matter what it costs her if it would give Casper more time with her. She is in contact with Pet Cure Oncology in NJ for their stereotactic radiation therapy.
As if that wasn't enough, on September 22, Naz had to rush back to the emergency vet, this time with Kaiser, when she noticed his gums were pale. They told her that he had internal hemorrhaging and was already anemic. The emergency vet said based on his age and size, there was a 2/3 chance that he had hemangiosarcoma which is a highly aggressive cancer of the cells lining the blood vessels that typically targets the spleen. But there was a 1/3 chance that it was a benign tumor that erupted. Even though the odds were stacked against him, she agreed with the emergency surgery because any chance is better than nothing. Unfortunately at 2am Thursday, they called her to tell her that when they opened him up, they saw a big tumor on the spleen and multiple smaller tumors all over his abdominal area. There was no way to remove everything so even with surgery and chemo, he probably wouldn’t have lasted a few months There was even no guarantee that he could have recovered from surgery. So she made the hard decision to let him go rather than prolong his pain. Kaiser crossed the rainbow bridge while being held by his family at 3am on September 23rd. His remains will be privately cremated on September 29th, where Naz can bring him home for the final time.
As our family is are trying to move forward, it is going to take a large financial toll in addition to the emotional toll. Currently, the combined vet bills for both Kaiser and Casper stands at over $15,000. The estimated cost for the radiation treatment for Casper could be between $10,000 - $15,000 (There is a high possibility that he would be hospitalized during his treatment). We are hoping that we can all come together as a community to help support Naz to pay for Casper's radiation therapy.
Thank you all for your love and support.
