Why I'm Raising Money
My name is Carter Clinton, a doctoral candidate in the Biology Department at Howard University. I'm seeking help to pay for my last semester of graduate school. Last year, I decided that I would not borrow any more loans for my program's completion year. I had a plan. I had a clear path to completion (submission/ publication of 3 journal articles), enough savings, a post-doctoral fellowship lined up, and the determination and will to finish. However, despite all this preparation, I faced unforeseen circumstances.
At the start of 2020, I was not paid for three months for my teaching assistantship due to a paperwork mix-up. As a graduate student living paycheck to paycheck in Washington, DC, this exponentially set me back. In March of 2020, when CoVid-19 prompted nationwide closings, my (bio) mom was unable to work. She was forced into early retirement, decreasing her monthly income suddenly and drastically. I was forced to get a part-time job to offset my expenses. I joined a payment plan to enroll for the Fall 2020 semester but could not keep up with the payments. I'm asking for help to pay off my Fall 2020 tuition debt (breakdown attached in photos) and for funds to enroll at Howard for my final (Spring '21) semester. You can always donate directly to the Howard University Office of the Bursar on my behalf. Anything will help.

My research explores the lifestyles of the New York African Burial Ground, the oldest and largest burial site of free and enslaved Africans ever discovered in North America. The project comprises three components: an elemental, a bacterial, and geospatial analysis from 400-hundred-year-old burial soil. We have illuminated details about the presence of pottery factories in Lower Manhattan, the religious and burial practices of this African population, and even gained insight into their diets. More recently, we are working to reconstruct each burial inhabitant's microbiome profiles to learn more about the infectious diseases they suffered from and their ancestral origins. With your help, the final paper will be submitted this semester.
