Help Carrole with her medical bills
Donation protected
My sister Carrole Dickens is struggling with her health and the medical bills that have resulted. Her insurance doesn't cover everything. Some of the insurance company's decisions have hampered her recovery. She needs support.
In the summer of 2021, after her second COVID vaccination, Carrole felt sick. At first, she thought it was just a reaction to the vaccine but as days went on, she wasn't getting better. She went to urgent care for relief. They immediately sent her to the ER. Her blood pressure was so high they thought she might have a stroke. Her blood sugar was also extremely elevated. The local hospital transferred her to Duke University Hospital, where she was put into Intensive Care for nearly a week. Her portion of the ER visit and the time at Duke totaled nearly $10,000.
This was only the beginning of her medical journey. She's now on medications for high blood pressure and diabetes. She's receiving injections in her eyes for diabetic retinopathy. More recently she's been diagnosed with anemia, and her legs have begun to retain fluids from leaking blood vessels. This last condition directly contributed to her most recent medical issue. Because her legs are so heavy, she has a hard time lifting her feet. This caused her to trip on porch steps and fall. She dislocated her elbow in the fall and had been unable to do anything that involved her dominant hand. She hasn't even been able to live at home because she needs help with everyday tasks like washing her hair and getting up from chairs. To add insult to injury, the insurance company denied her vein surgery to reduce the swelling, calling it "elective." Since she can't drive, she can't work, so she's not getting paid.
Currently, Carrole is under treatment by an orthopedic surgeon, an endocrinologist, a heart/vascular specialist, and a retinologist. She's still waiting to learn if she will need to have "Tommy John" surgery on her elbow -- which can't be done in the town where she lives. They still need to determine why she's anemic and remedy that. And she needs to have vein surgery.
Carrole's medical debts seem high when you have no income. The future seems uncertain, except for the guarantee that there will be more medical expenses. Any help you can generously offer would be much appreciated.
