My name is Vanessa, and I am asking for help for my mom, Carolyn Brandenburg. Carolyn is a beloved Professor who dedicated so much of her life to teaching and caring for others. Recently, our lives changed when she was diagnosed with lung disease, despite never smoking a day in her life. As her condition worsened, she had to go on oxygen and make the heartbreaking decision to leave the job she loved. Her doctor told her she could no longer work, and while she waited seven long months for disability, her life savings were depleted just trying to survive and keep up with daily needs.

Now my mom is on the path toward a life-changing lung transplant, but our family has been told that she cannot move forward in the transplant process until we can show proof of $12,000 in available funds. This requirement is in place because after her transplant procedure, Carolyn will need to relocate near UCLA for three months so she can remain close to her medical team and receive the care and monitoring she will need during recovery. We are doing everything we can, but this need is more than we can carry alone.
