Help My Mom Hear Again and Overcome a Devastating Infection

Hi, my name is Alexis, and I’m reaching out with a heavy heart for my amazing mom, Carolyn Fender. Over the past year, she’s faced a health crisis that has completely turned her life upside down. My mom has always been the strongest person I know, but now she needs help—and I can’t do this alone.

Last summer, she began to lose her hearing in both ears due to repeated ear infections. Despite countless doctor visits, medications, and treatments, her condition kept worsening. After getting eustachian tubes placed, we thought things were finally looking up. But shortly after, a devastating viral infection caused her right ear to go completely silent.

In December, an emergency surgery revealed that the infection had begun attacking her hearing nerves. The surgery lasted over 5 hours and involved removing part of her mastoid bone and reconstructing her ear with a tissue graft. She spent six days in the hospital on IV antibiotics while doctors worked tirelessly to fight an infection they’d never seen this severe before.

Now, my mom is home, fighting to recover with the help of a nurse and ongoing IV antibiotics three times a day for eight weeks. She still can’t hear out of her right ear, and it’s unclear how much of her hearing will come back. Throughout all of this, she hasn’t been able to work, and the medical bills are overwhelming.

My mom has always been there for us, giving so much of herself to our family and friends. It’s heartbreaking to see her struggling, both physically and financially. That’s why I’m asking for your help.
