Help Danny’s Family Overcome Medical Crisis

Hi, my name is Caroline, and I’m trying to help my sister avoid medical bankruptcy. Her child, age 14, has been in the hospital for two weeks with neurological problems that have made it hard to speak or understand words. There have been multiple MRIs, CAT scans, EEGs, EKGs, spinal taps and other tests. The doctors initially found an anomaly in the frontal lobe of the brain, and now the inflammation has spread to other parts of the brain. They thought viral encephalitis, then other tests revealed blood clots in the neck and brain. Now they are thinking autoimmune something. The doctors are still not sure, but they are saying at least a few more weeks in the hospital. $$$$

After being discharged from the hospital, this child will not be able to return to school or normal activities for a long time and will need care for as long as a year. My sister, a Montessori teacher, will have to quit her job to provide that care. Her child will likely need speech therapy and physical therapy to learn to speak and walk normally again, and will not be able to be left alone.

Fortunately, the family does have some medical insurance, but the portion owed after insurance pays is already out of hand and promises to get so much worse. The family needs help getting the bills paid until my sister can go back to work.

This is a hard-working family that has been blindsided by a terrifying medical crisis they could never have planned for. Just like other families we hear about who fall through the cracks of our healthcare system while trying to take care of their seriously ill children, they need help in this difficult time.
