Carole Butler Cutry (60yrs old) of Medford Lakes NJ.
Carole was living a vibrant and healthy life until November 2021, when her world was turned upside down.
Carole began having strange stroke-like symptoms that perplexed her doctors and worried her family. Tests eventually revealed that Carole had metastatic ovarian cancer complicated by an extremely rare condition known as Paraneoplastic Syndrome (PNS). Essentially, Carole’s immune system got confused and began attacking her healthy brain and her diseased ovaries. The assault was swift and vicious and left her with irreversible damage to the part of her brain that controls speech, coordination, and muscle movement- symptoms similar to Parkinson’s. Miraculously, Carole’s cancer is now in remission thanks to a successful surgery and a long and challenging series of chemotherapy in the spring. We have celebrated this miracle twice. Carole also beat breast cancer 15 years ago.
Now our focus shifts from saving her life to preserving a life that looks very different from the one she had a year ago. Carole can no longer walk or coordinate small muscle movements. Her speech is impaired, and she is plagued with constant tremors making it challenging to complete the daily tasks we all take for granted. There is no known cure for PNS. At present, Carole’s condition requires 24-hour round-the-clock care. Her struggle
will likely be lifelong. Thankfully, her cognition was unaffected, so she is as sharp, bright, and funny as
she always has been. It also means that she knows every day what she is up against. Her fighting spirit and the grace she has handled her illness are truly inspiring. She is a warrior and our hero!
Throughout Carole’s journey, we have become intimate with the hidden landmines of health insurance. Rare disorders like PNS receive very little research funding, and as such, many treatments are considered experimental and therefore denied by insurance. Carole’s medical bills and list of her needs continue to pile up as she and her
family tries any and all outlets to relieve some of the symptoms.
Our Goal:
This request for help is not easy, but we are putting our pride aside and asking for your support. The road ahead will be long, complex, and very costly. Our goal is to provide Carole with the funds she needs to obtain her highest level of function and independence and to alleviate some of the financial burdens of her care so that her family can focus on what matters most… her.
Thank you in advance for your generosity. Please help and spread the word. Please
keep Carole and her family in your prayers.
