For nearly five decades Carol Stephens has been an integral part of Colorado’s Intellectual and Developmental Disability community. She has worked directly with thousands of children and adults throughout the State and has advocated for their rights and has helped to make certain that people are receiving quality services. Additionally, she has mentored and encouraged many people who were fortunate to have worked with her. Carol always has time for others to problem solve, figure out a solution to a problem or to be the calming voice of reason when things seem hopeless or way too challenging. Carol’s unfailing efforts to always do the right thing for others is the hallmark of her career, the way she lives each day and what makes her such an extraordinary woman.
Right now, Carol needs our help! In October 2018 Carol was diagnosed with advanced stage pancreatic cancer. Carol has faced this diagnosis with the utmost grace and determination. She has greatly impressed her oncology team with her ability to “keep on going” after very evasive rounds of chemotherapy. She is positively determined to beat the survival odds that this horrible cancer has. Carol demonstrates each day that she has many more great years to live! She wants to continue being a good mother, grandmother, neighbor, co-worker, mentor, and friend.
Carol is facing major surgery in March. Her rounds have chemotherapy have successfully shrunk the tumor on her pancreas and surrounding organs. The surgeons are now able to remove it and repair the damage that the tumor has created. Carol jokingly says that she is going in for a “cut and paste” procedure and is counting on the surgeons removing as much of the tumor as they possibly can. Carol faces a long recovery from the surgery and realizes that she is going to accumulate expenses related to a long hospitalization and extended recovery that she simply won’t be able to cover.
It is now our turn to help. Carol is determined to make a good/full recovery and we can all help reduce her stress of monumental hospital bills by donating.
