In a fair fight, there’s no opponent I’d put my money on over David Heflin, but Alzheimers, isn’t fair. Alzheimers is a devastating, ruthless, uncaring disease that robs the mind and body equally, slowly taking pieces of a person away from those that love them before it takes the body.
When David Heflin was diagnosed with Alzheimers, he took it as he took all things; in stride. A man who fought Golden Gloves and married into a family with 6 children doesn’t shake easily. He faced it head on, agreed to any treatment that could help him, and simply said “I want to stay at home as long as possible.”
As his condition worsens, it’s reached a stage where his family cannot care for him alone.
If you’ve ever met David, or had the good fortune of knowing him well, you already know how far the grace of his kindness and patience can reach; it’s legendary. We hope to honor his wish for as long as physically possible, but are now in need of help.
It’s our hope to raise the funds necessary to afford additional in-home care from a professional nurse/caretaker part time in order to keep him safe and at home. Carol, his wife, needs some additional resources, as caring for David in his current condition requires more resources than a spouse can provide.
Many of you who find yourselves reading this have likely been touched personally by David’s generosity, either physically or emotionally although usually, culinarily. We believe the love he has sown throughout this world during his life will help us achieve our goal and his entire family thanks you in advance if you’re able to help.
