Help Carol and Her Cat Find a New Home

Hi, I'm Carol. My apartment was flooded and I need to move out as soon as possible. I'm a receptionist at a hospital and live hand to mouth. I have a 14-year-old rescue cat I adopted last year. I've had some difficult times with this apartment since my boyfriend, Mike Horne, passed away in 2016. My former landlord felt he was missing money because I was paying two rents and living by myself. He wouldn't give me a lease; he would ask me to move out; he would ask me to bring other people in, but my place is not that big. It's perfect if you're a couple or a single parent with a child/teenager. My answer has always been the same: I don't have anywhere to go and not enough money to move away. Things had been quiet since the pandemic, but recently new people moved in next door, and he started to ask me about moving again. Of course, I don't want to stay where I'm not wanted, but again, I didn't have the money to move out. In November, I got a text that he sold the building to a management company, and they want everyone out eventually to renovate the building. I've been in the process of looking up my old 401K to see if maybe I can borrow against it for the money I need. Honestly, I don't know who manages it now. My old workplace has been bought and sold 5-6 times, so I've been hitting some dead ends. I still thought I had time on my side as long as I kept paying the rent. Last Thursday night, I came home from work to find my apartment flooded, my stuff soaked, and ceiling tiles soaked and broken everywhere. I've been needing to move out for the longest time, but I don't have the money to move out on my own. But I can't live here anymore. I need to move out ASAP.
