Hello!!!
My lovely, badass friend and performance artist Caro is going through surgery and treatment for breast cancer. She had it once before and now it is back again. She needs support for her treatments (see the breakdown below) and the world needs to know about her and support her life!
After her first diagnosis, when she was 35, she responded by creating the performance project oncogrrrls. Since then more than 100 people (so far) have engaged in creative processes with her about the challenges of living with cancer in our societies, in Spain, Mexico, and the United States. She has spent the last 10 years organizing art with others and creating 'cancer communities', making the 'isolating' cancer experience an opportunity for collective art making and environmental, health, and social justice in collaboration with cancer activist movements such as Breast Cancer Action.
Look at her amazing work with cancer here: http://oncogrrrls.art
She is not only a badass, generous and caring person, she is also a brilliant, creative, and intelligent soul -- someone who puts all her energy in learning, staying curious, and creating spaces for 'togethering' and social healing. She has spent 10 years working in her PhD in Performance Studies at the University of California Davis, exploring ways to facilitate health activist workshops through art making processes. Or in other words, "onco-creation" :P. Caro says that as long as there is unequal access to health treatments and pollution impacting communities in uneven ways, we all have cancer. Caro brings people together. She is an activist, an artist, an educator, a 'cancer doula' and a healer. And we love her.
Navigating medical expenses in the US is exhausting and isolating. While she has coverage through her student health insurance, it will end soon: Caro just finished her Ph.D. and while in the transitional moment, cancer treatment costs are making this moment too challenging to breath calmly. She is facing medical and extra expenses up to $19.500. It breaks down:
Diagnostic tests (several mamos, ultrasounds, biopsies, stereotoptic guided biopsies, MRI's, doctor's visits)- 5000
Medical counseling (genetic tests, second visits, counselors) 1000
Treatment (Surgery (lumpectomy), Radiotherapy 5x5, medication, follow up doctor's visits) -6.700
Covering PPO health insurance - 5.040
Extras (gasoline- daily car trips to/from Davis-Sacramento, postage of medical records, after visit treats )- 1.800
We live in a place where healthcare is not provided as the right it is but has to be pieced together in fragments through narrative appeals on social media. There are so many narratives of care work I could offer of Caro, but here's one by her friend Jessica Stokes: "WhenI couldn’t afford my wheelchair in Davis, Caro helped support me with a dance party/fundraiser to put me on a roll again. She’s full of beautiful healing love and play and silliness in this dystopia. Please help however you can".
And many of us, her friends, are behind her and this petition. See [below] what else her friends have to say:

Hola!!!
Pruebas y consejo diagnostico secundario : tests genéticos, segundas visitas: 1000
Tratamiento (Cirugía- lumpectomy), radioterapia 5 Dias x semana, 5 semanas, medicamentos y seguimiento -6.700
Seguro Médico: 5.040
Extras (gasolina- daily car trips to/from Davis-Sacramento, after visit treats, postage of medical records )- 1.800
