Dear Friends, Family, and Kindhearted Strangers,

My name is Sirena Mireles. My sister, Alyzabeth Mancilla, and I are reaching out to you with heavy hearts to share devastating news about our beloved mother Carmen Campos. Our mother was recently diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), a cruel and terminal illness with no known cure. CJD is a rare but always fatal disease.

In late 2023, my mother’s health issues began. At that time, the doctors believed that she had a stroke because the signs pointed to that diagnosis. They told us that as long as she went to physical and speech therapy and followed their plan, she would be better in 6 to 9 months. Unfortunately, they were wrong, because my mother began to get worse.

She was in and out of the hospital for testing and they could not figure out what was wrong. During one of these visits, one of her doctor’s told us that her symptoms appeared to be consistent with CJD. They then tested her for CJD in April 2024. When the results came back three weeks later, they were negative for CJD. We were so happy to hear this, because we now had hope that she would get better.

As time went by, my mother’s health continued to deteriorate. We then began to see different specialists to figure out why she was getting worse. Some of the specialists had hopes that they could make a diagnosis and they told us that they needed to continue to test her. Unfortunately, all of the test results kept on coming back negative and our options were running out. Her neurologist then told us that he believed that she might have CJD. Even though she had previously tested negative for CJD, he told us that we needed to test her again in order to completely rule out a CJD diagnosis.

They tested her for CJD again in June and this time the results came back positive. Our heart’s were shattered because we knew what a CJD diagnosis meant. It meant she had an untreatable and incurable disease, and that we could lose our mother at any time.

Since her CJD diagnosis, my mother’s physical condition has drastically declined. Although she has been resilient throughout, she is now completely bed bound and needs 24-hour care. Her illness has been hard on my entire family, and it has been especially devastating for my children.

They are constantly worried about their grandma. They have seen how this disease has affected her, and have spent countless nights crying. Prior to her illness, she was very active in their lives. She would pick them up every weekend, and would spend school breaks and summers with them, but now she is no longer able to engage in any activities with them. My mother is a beautiful person and she has touched countless lives with her generosity. She is our everything.

We have been blessed with an amazing family that has been helping us as much as they can through this difficult time, but time and money are not on our side. We have all been trying our best to raise enough money for her medical expenses and her future funeral expenses. Even though my mother is still with us, we must begin making arrangements for her funeral because her illness is far advanced and CJD is a fatal disease that has no treatment or cure.
