The Heart of Our Community

Carmen Lerma has spent her life serving Milwaukee. From her leadership at UMOS to being named 2023 Hispanic Woman of the Year, Carmen has been a tireless advocate for the Latino community, workforce development, and cultural pride. She has always been the first to show up for others; now, it is our turn to show up for her.

A Courageous Fight:

In 2020, Carmen became a medical pioneer as Wisconsin's first double-lung transplant recipient due to COVID-19. Her survival was a miracle, and she immediately used her second chance to advocate for community health and awareness.

The Financial Hurdle:

The battle didn't end with surgery. To keep her new lungs functioning, Carmen requires a lifelong regimen of expensive, life-saving medications. Shockingly, her insurance does not cover the full cost of these essential meds. Out-of-pocket expenses have become an overwhelming burden that no one should have to bear alone.
