On September 30th of this year, Carmella had a L5 laminectomy spinal surgery. While the doctor said that everything went well, the damage was more extensive than anticipated. Carmella was home for about 8 days before she felt fluid coming down her back. On October 8th, her husband, Johnnie, took her to the hospital and she was placed in a restrictive, trendelenburg position on bed rest. The following day, Carmella went in for a second surgery to repair a dura tear in hopes to correct the leaking cerebrospinal fluid. Carmella was discharged about 4 days later. While the leaking subsided for a bit, it started again on November 4th. The doctors then decided that Carmella would need a blood patch to help seal the leak. Two days later, she had the blood patch procedure. The day immediately after, she started uncontrollably vomiting and having intense headaches. She returned to the hospital and was given orders to be on strict bed rest. Carmella's recovery journey all came to a head yesterday, on November 14th, when her back was drenched in cerebrospinal fluid. She called 911 and was rushed to Silver Cross Hospital. A neurosurgeon completed an emergency surgery to place a drain in her back. Now, Carmella is waiting to see if the spine makes a full recovery or if she will have to undergo an additional surgery to put a shunt in. Due to the complications and additional surgeries, Johnnie is left with no choice but to take off work to take care of his family. Because Johnnie has recently switched jobs and is considered a new hire, he can't get FMLA and is taking off work unpaid. This has put a great financial strain on the family's ability to pay their mortgage and other household related bills. Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated at this time.
