Help Carlos on his Path to Recovery

Carlos Martinez lights up a room with his easy smile and self-deprecating humor, so it’s not obvious at first glance how many obstacles he has overcome. Carlos was my son’s soccer teammate when they were teenagers. Over the years, I have mentored him and admired his resilience as he pushed past so many hurdles to achieve his goals. He was the first in his family to graduate high school. He went on to graduate from Mount IDA College as a standout on the soccer team, and he recently started an amazing new job in Finance Operations. More importantly, he is loyal, hard-working and always willing to help others out.

 

Carlos has now been challenged with another significant obstacle when he landed in ICU after a horrific car crash. A week into this nightmare he is still connected to many life supports. He has always been fiercely independent, but he will need some help to overcome this challenge.

 

With the support of a dedicated team at MGH, he is making progress. In his brief periods of consciousness, he responds appropriately and shows signs that the Carlos we know and love is fighting his way back to us. It will be a struggle through hospitalization, physical therapy and painful recovery. But we are confident he can work his way back to the life he has been building with his family, loving girlfriend, career, friends and soccer teammates. This long healing journey will be expensive.
