Carla and her family have been part of our community in Oak Park for over 15 years. She and her husband came to the U.S. from Mexico when her daughter was a baby, looking for a safer, brighter future for her, and they’ve built one here, through hard work, kindness, and deep contributions to their community. Her son was born here and is a U.S. citizen, and is thriving in high school. Her daughter's DACA application was put on hold indefinitely by the Trump administration shortly before it was meant to be approved; she started college in fear and uncertainty. And, now, unbelievably and horrifyingly, the situation has become even more dire for her family.
Carla is a beloved house cleaner and caretaker—she lovingly watches our dog Rosie when we’re away, and Rosie is best friends with their sweet pup, Max. This is a family that gives so much, quietly and generously, every day.
But now, Carla and her husband are living in fear. They cannot leave their home to work. They’ve seen members of their community taken from their cars. As Carla told me recently via text, “I’m not scared of being deported. I’m scared of abandoning my children. They’re hunting us like we are animals.”
This is not just a story about immigration. It’s about a family who belongs here, who has built a life here, and who deserves safety, dignity, and peace. We are raising funds to help Carla’s family cover basic living expenses while they are unable to work, and to support any legal or protective measures they may need.
I wish there was more we could do. Rosie doesn't want her best buddy, Max, to leave. Please give what you can. Every dollar helps keep this family together and safe.
