After a tough year marked by financial struggles and a layoff, Carl was finally starting to get back on his feet — finding a new job, rebuilding stability, and making progress on his student loans. But just as things were looking up, he was hit with a sudden and serious medical emergency that has turned his world upside down.

In August, Carl woke up with what seemed like a simple sore foot. By the next morning, his entire leg was swollen and painful from his groin to his toes, and his foot began to turn red. He went straight to the doctor and was diagnosed with cellulitis, a potentially serious bacterial infection. Despite starting antibiotics right away, things worsened — an ulcer formed on the bottom of his foot, was being successfully treated until a precautionary MRI scan soon revealed that a infection had taken root in the bones of his foot.

Carl underwent surgery to clean and repair the damage and began IV antibiotic treatments through a PICC line. While the procedure was successful, the strong medications caused a serious setback — his kidneys began to fail, forcing doctors to change his treatment plan. Now, Carl continues to receive twice daily infusions and is doing everything he can to recover fully and avoid amputation.

Even with insurance, Carl faces over $10,000 in out-of-pocket medical bills — an overwhelming financial burden on top of the damage to his health. Carl is the kind of person who shows up for others, even when life has thrown him curveballs. He is generous, kind, and is always finding the good in life even when things are incredibly tough.
