Help Carl pay for his legal fees

My names Sam and I have started this gofundme in hopes of raising money for my good friend Carl so that he might attain a decent lawyer while fighting a contrived and racist charge. In late March Carl got into a physical altercation with several white men in downtown Fargo. The police were called and in short order Carl was the only one handcuffed and the only one charged with a crime. While serving time in jail awaiting his eventual trial Carl was assaulted by two corrections officers in May of 2017. He was thrown down and kicked and summarily put into solitary confinement for an unreasonably long period of time. This alone is cruel and unusual but to add insult to injury he was arrested and served with a warrant while visiting family in Fargo in October and told he was being charged with assaulting a peace officer-a charge that carries a possible 5 year sentence- stemming from the jail incident. His public defendant has become less responsive lately and while acknowledging that public defendants are often over burdened and under paid we are also looking to give Carl the best possible chance to avoid doing any time for a charge that’s clearly racist and unsubstantiated.

Those of you who know me well know how much I love and respect Carl. He’s one of the kindest and most well intentioned people I know and has been one of my closest friends for a significant period of time. If you have some extra money please consider contributing it to keeping my friend out of prison. Do it whether you care about me or Carl or hate the broken American judicial system or hate Fargo or racism or whatever but if you have the means please look out for the homie.
After finding what seems to be a reliable and honest lawyer we are asking for $8,000 to see Carl through this whole process. The lawyer alone will cost $7,500 in addition to the loss of income brought about by Carl’s needing to meet with said lawyer in Fargo and pre trial days and trial days and everything in between. Carl also had to put up $1,000 in bail when he was arrested and served in October so we would like to leave him as financially secure as possible ahead of what looks to be an arduous and frustrating trial process.
