In December of 2015 our family was struck with disaster as we watched our dad Carl suffer a major heart attack in our family home at just 52 years of age. After the worst 24 hours of our lives, the amazing doctors at the Alfred Hospital were able to perform a quadruple bi-pass surgery to save his life. Unfortunately, Dads battle didn't end here.
Over the last couple of years damage to the heart from the heart attack has worsened despite every effort to stay healthy. Dads life for the last few years has been constant doctors appointments, ambulance trips, hospital admissions and most recently a month in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) suffering from heart failure related kidney failure. Despite all that has been thrown at him and the huge decline in quality and ease of life, Dad has stayed so brave and so positive, determined to fight it out to the very end. After the ICU admission in January of this year, Dad was told he needed a heart transplant or he would have 6 months to live. Doctors told Dad that he would need many tests done to ensure he was eligible to be put onto the heart transplant list. After an anxious wait, our family received the fantastic news that Dad has been listed for a heart transplant. Our family was so happy. Until another hurdle came our way...
The pressure in Dads lungs has now risen to a level were he is no longer eligible for a heart transplant. With the pressure being this high, a heart transplant is too risky. As I sat in the doctors office and watched my dad receive this news after fighting for so long, my heart broke in two. His last hope is to undergo major open heart surgery on the 4th April and receive a mechanical heart. If successful, Dad can eventually get back onto the heart transplant list and prepare himself for surgery again.
My Dad is such a loving, generous and brave family man. His love for our family is what drives him to continue this fight for his life. Our family consists of my dad, my mum, 4 girls and 1 boy. My younger 3 siblings still live at home and my younger brother is just 11 years of age. My mum works full time to support my family, as well as juggling full time care of my dad and being a mum. The emotional and financial stress on my family at this time is challenging and we know there is a still a long road ahead of us.
It is with a humble heart that we ask for your donation to support my family in dads fight for a heart.
