My sweet kitty cat Carina, who seemed healthy, suddenly got very sick a couple days ago, stopped eating, and could barely move. I had to take her to the animal hospital in the middle of the night, and the testing and treatment is going to be very expensive. She has been admitted to the hospital for treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. I didn’t know she had diabetes, but the ketoacidosis was likely triggered by something else, so the hospital is still running more tests. Unfortunately the expenses don’t stop at discharge, as she’ll need a special diet, syringes, insulin injections, and regular vet visits and bloodwork. I’m 23 and in school, and already struggling financially and medically, with chronic pain, endometriosis, and a recent celiac disease diagnosis. I’m in the process of moving right now, trying to finish schoolwork, and now have a hospital bill that will take five years to pay off. I want to give Carina the best life possible and see her back to her talkative, curious self. She’s been my best friend since she was a kitten and I was in high school. I’m not ready to say goodbye.
