During the 20 years they have been together, it has never been in Carey and George’s nature to ask for help…not when they lost their downtown NYC apartment after 9/11, and not when they were evacuated from their home during the California wildfires. Now, however, Carey is suddenly facing an unexpected and overwhelming challenge.
Carey was shocked when doctors recently discovered a malignant cancerous tumor (myoepithelial carcinoma) in the hard palate and bone of her mouth. She’s facing this head on: In early June, she will undergo surgery to remove the tumor at UCLA. Following the surgery and weeklong stay in the hospital, she will need subsequent treatments, including an initial custom prosthetic and future oral cavity reconstruction surgery. This painful and arduous recovery process is expected to last several months at the least – probably years.
The financial burdens Carey and George face are particularly daunting: both are self-employed and will be largely unable to work during this crisis. Additionally, their self-employment health insurance has significant coverage gaps and high deductibles. They have been warned that much of the necessary surgery, and subsequent treatment, will not be covered. We’ve launched this campaign to help offset uncovered medical and dental expenses, and mitigate the closing of their business while Carey recuperates.
Carey and George understand that their story is not unique. They are not the only family whose lives have been turned upside-down by cancer, and also know how COVID-19 has affected the incomes of many and has made charitable donations more difficult than ever. They ask only that you consider their current circumstances and to contribute in any way you can comfortably afford. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. Your thoughts and prayers are equally important, and spreading the word and sharing this page among your greater network is also helpful. Thank you,
