We grieve the passing of Timothy (“Tim”) Bertram Carey, Jr. Tim was a loving husband, brother, uncle, and lay pastor of the Tarpum Bay Methodist Church in the settlement of Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera, The Bahamas. Tim was a gentle and kind pillar of the community and of his family. Born in Tarpum Bay on April 23, 1945, Tim lived on Eleuthera his entire life.
He and his beloved wife of more than sixty years, Julie Ann, travelled to Baltimore on Aug 2nd, 2025 to spend time with their only son Greg and his family. Tim and Julie Ann were looking forward to celebrating Greg’s wedding anniversary and celebrating their grandson Allan’s birthday. An undiagnosed and serious infection landed Tim in the Emergency Room at University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). The doctors investigated what Tim referred to as a ‘little abdominal pain’ that he reasoned might have been caused by his belt during the flight to Baltimore. After a series of tests, the talented medical teams found a massive and life-threatening cancer of the colon. With Tim’s and his family’s consent, the UMMC surgical oncology team removed the tumor.
Tim received extended post-operative medical and specialist care and experienced a number of starts and set-backs. He was constantly surrounded by family and remained firmly rooted in his faith. He made friends on the wards and entertained many people with his warmth and witty sense of humor. Ultimately, the surgery and subsequent recovery period took a significant toll on Tim’s eighty-year-old body. As Tim’s recovery slowed and began a gradual decline, plans for his continued care ranged from extended and continued care in the U.S., to airlifting and continuing care in The Bahamas. Appearing to have a premonition of the weeks to come, Tim called in his family, thanking and blessing them. Several days later, on Thursday morning, October 30th, 2025, our beloved Tim quietly passed on.
We appreciate the extensive outpouring of love, kindness and support we are receiving from all who loved our family and loved Tim. He will be returned to The Bahamas for his life to be celebrated by his extensive family as well as the community that he served and who loved him in return. We are touched by the lovely flowers, calls and messages.
Many are asking how to help. Tim’s health costs alone are well-over $315,000 to date and related costs continue to trickle in and will continue to accrue into the foreseeable future.
For those who choose to or are able, in lieu of flowers, we are asking that you contribute to the Go-Fund-Me account his grandson Brandon Carey and son, Greg, set up for him. All donations and gifts go toward his and his widow’s expenses and care. You may contact us directly using the form at the bottom of this page if you have any questions.
We appreciate your love and support and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
With humble gratitude,
The Carey Family
