Help care for Tere

Meet my mom Tere, a vibrant, sharp, and independent woman. Well, that was before hip surgery. Tere went from being totally independent and able to walk and take care of herself like a regular mature adult to where she is now just a few months later, 81 pounds (initially 100 pounds), incontinent, and unable to walk. She needs a Lot of physical therapy as her legs are contracted and she’s in a lot of pain. My mom needs 24 hour care, with someone with her to meet her basic needs. Her Medicare will run out in a few days so she will be returned home from the Skilled Nursing Facility.

My dad needs help paying for an in-home person to care for my mom. It’ll cost about $210 per day for a person to care for her, just 8 hours a day. The social worker applied for MediCal way too late so my dad has a minimum of a month and a half of her care to pay for out of pocket, and that’s just the basic care. She still needs PT and other assistance to Improve her health. She’s a fighter and I believe she can do it, with your help.

Money will be used for the in-home care person, and hopefully if there’s enough we can have a second opinion from a doctor familiar with elder care, and more physical therapy than the home Medicare will pay for.

My dad was in the military during Vietnam, and was a postal worker before he retired. He makes just enough to be too much for many of the programs he looked into for vets, which is the rub because it’s not nearly enough to cover mom’s care needs at home.

We will be so grateful for any amount that you can contribute and if you’d rather use the pal, I’m at EMcguire4902 Or ‘Mo at EM-McGuire thanks so much!! If you have any ideas of where else that my dad can apply for help, please let me know, too.

THE HIGH AMOUNT DESIRED: Is to pay for a home care facility since she really needs 24 hour care. Those would cost roughly $800/day. It’s hoped that she can be in one for a few months (as it can take up to 90 days for the MediCal to go through).

What happened to her? My mom turned 80 and a month later slipped off the couch and needed emergency surgery on her hip. Then, so many things happened to the detriment of her quick recovery which I wouldn’t wish on anyone! (Including getting Covid while in the hospital, being skipped many times from PT, and being over medicated so she needed to go to emergency, and being quarantined twice for the same Covid because the second hospital didn’t receive records of when she’d had it.)
(Some ideas below from what I learned so it doesn’t happen to your loved one.)

Ideas for elder care:
1. (Kinda obviously but has to be stated: )Don’t let them fall!
2. Make sure they are made to walk the next day Immediately After the hip replacement. Don’t let the PT go without having them walk right away. Page the PT if they don’t. (I wish I had!!)
3. Even if it seems that the hospital is fine, get a mask for your family member to prevent COVID, anyway. If they refuse to wear one, buy a full face cover.
4. Have secondary coverage, get Medicare part B.
5. Apply for MediCal immediately if your loved one is hospitalized.
6. Appreciate Every moment you have with your parents because it goes away too quickly.
7. Video record their stories and health information while they still remember them. Write it down.
