A week and a half ago, I adopted an 8-year-old, 4-pound Chihuahua after her owner became hospitalized and could no longer care for her. Overnight, she lost the only home she had known and was separated from her two lifelong dog companions. I took her in hoping to give her comfort, safety, and a fresh start.

Instead, shortly after coming home with me, she became seriously ill and was diagnosed with pneumonia.

Since then, I’ve done everything I can to help her fight through this. I’ve already spent about $4,000 on emergency vet visits, medications, exams, and treatment, but despite all efforts, she still isn’t improving enough on outpatient care.

Her veterinarians believe she still has a chance at recovery, but she urgently needs overnight emergency hospitalization, oxygen support, and intensive monitoring. The estimated cost for the care she needs is $5,600–$8,000+, which is more than I was prepared for in such a short period of time.

Her name is Care Bear (the name she came with and we have kept because it truly suits her), and she’s tiny, fragile, and has already been through so much loss and change in such a short time. I don’t want her story to end here when she still has a chance to recover and experience stability, love, and comfort again.
