Between Stone and Sky is a documentary directed by Hera Ford and Mahogany Star Brown. It follows the legacy of last living member of the the 360 acre Williams Plantation, Bessie Lou Williams Ford bought in 1892 by Bill and Molly Williams, the Great-Great grandparents of Hera Ford.
Like many other Black sharecroppers in the Mississippi Delta they later lost this land to white authorities in 1939. Many of Hera’s ancestors are still buried on this plantation including her Great - Great Grrandfather Bill Williams. However, he was buried without a headstone and this summer we will travel to the Williams Plantation to place one for him.
Though the land no longer belongs to Hera’s family on paper, in spirit and in stone there they lie.
We are raising money to support a small documentary crew to capture the placement of the headstone as well as Hera’s grandmother’s return to the plantation who currently lives in Gary, Indiana. The funds will go directly to equipment, gear rentals, crew fees, flights and lodging costs. We will also be selling hand-printed t-shirts designed and printed by Hera to support the film. Regardless of what you’re able to give we are grateful and excited for the opportunity to tell you this story!
Thank you, and we hope the next time you see us on the big screen, and you’ll know that this was possible with your contribution to keeping Black Stories alive!
