I met (Captain) Kirk in August 2009, while setting up for the first legal cannabis event in Corktown, Detroit. It was literally the beginning of legalization in MI and we were all excited about the future of our industry.
Kirk helped unload straw so the wheelchairs wouldn’t get stuck in the mud after a huge rainstorm the night before. It’s ironic that that’s why we’re here now, and I thank you all for taking the time to read this.
(Captain) Kirk leads with a willingness to help others, and that’s my first memory of him. Now our friend and colleague needs our help and I’m hoping we can show him the community still knows how to rally around one of our own.
Kirk is wheelchair bound after his recent Muscular Sclerosis attack, shortly after moving home to launch the edible brand Hey Captain, here in Michigan. Launching this brand has been a long-time dream for our team and has taken everything we have to get it off the ground.
Being the grateful man he is, he’s working away at new recipes for everyone to enjoy, not complaining about his new reality. His move home and the health issues he’s experienced left him financially unable to make the changes necessary to live normally. He would never ask for help, so I’m doing it for him.
We built a temporary ramp to get him home before Christmas, and are in need of funds for the following:
- Construction costs to widen the doorways and make the kitchen accessible/functional in his home. $8000
- Construction and material costs to convert his bathroom to an ADA compliant space. $5500
- A deposit for an ADA van that will fit his family of 4 and his wheelchair. They will have to trade their compact car in. $15,000-20,000
- A long term ramp with good grips for his chair. $3500
