My name is Brandon, I took my dog Candy for a walk at Cerritos Park East on Saturday, April 10th, around 5:30 pm. As we were walking on the paved walkway on the backside of the park, a Pitbull charged out at Candy, the tie that held the dog snapped off and attacked Candy. I used Candy's leash to pull her away from the Pitbull, but the Pitbull was so quick and determined. Unfortunately, the Pitbull was able to latch on Candy's shoulder and part of her lower jaw. Two people from the party that knows the dog ran out and tried to unhinge the bit from the Pitbull's jaw, but they weren't able to make the Pitbull release Candy. Thankfully, my dad was able to choke the Pitbull by pulling the collar harness, and after some time the Pitbull finally let go of candy.
As Candy was bleeding profusely from her shoulder and mouth we quickly took her to VCA Lakewood Animal Hospital. It is not final yet, but for now, they want to do a CT scan and she's under constant pain medication, oral medication, and sedation. The primary issue is that Candy can't eat or drink with her fractured jaw. So she has to stay at the hospital for constant care.
For her medical bill so far, we paid $500 for the doctor evaluation, diagnostic, and pain treatment at VCA Lakewood Animal Hospital. $1700 for an overnight stay, care, pain medication, IV Fluid, and monitoring at VCA West LA. This is all before surgery, and they recommend Candy have lower jaw surgery, and at least another day at the hospital which is today April 11th, and we are anxiously waiting for the doctor to call us on the surgery procedures.
A little history on Candy, two years ago I adopted her and we went through everything together from hiking to the beach, and biking. She follows me everywhere, she sleeps next to me every night, she hardly ever separate from me. we truly became real friends and I find I'm dependent on her emotionally more than she is dependent on me. This is the first time she's ever been in a hospital, we are very concerned and worried about whenever she'll be well again.
I am a college student working part-time at a local tea shop, and so we seek funding for Candy's medical bills, and assistance will be appreciated, and we will update Candy's status and her condition as we gain more information.
