Candy is our dear friend and the loving mother of Dario (age 7) and Shaun (age 15). They lived in Little London, Jamaica, which received a direct hit from Hurricane Melissa. Their home was completely destroyed, along with all of their belongings. Candy and her boys were left with literally only the clothes on their backs and the shoes on their feet. Since then, they have been staying in a small room at a friend's house, sleeping on chairs. Candy has barely slept since the hurricane, and her restaurant job was put on hold when the building was damaged, leaving her with no income during those months. On Christmas, she could only feed her sons a few crackers and some packets of sauce. Now, she is back to working, which is just enough to cover food and bus fare, but not enough to save for a new home.
We have known Candy for ten years. She is the only server at Murphy's, a small restaurant on West End Road. Candy is a strong, proud woman who has faced many hardships in life. The father of her boys passed away eight years ago, and she has been raising them on her own ever since. It took some loving persistence on our part over the years to make a connection with her. But since then we have become close, and she has opened her heart to us. She now greets us with a huge smile on her face and the most loving hugs. On our recent visit to Jamaica in January, she vulnerably shared with us about her situation. She had not previously shared her challenges with anyone as she did not feel safe to do so. Our hearts broken open hearing of the struggles of her and her sons. We immediately provided her with enough funds to help her feed her family, buy clothes, and buy the boys their required school uniforms so they could return to school. We were also able to help them move into a room rental with a bed for a month.
Now, Candy and her sons need our help to rebuild their lives. Funds raised will go toward securing a small wooden house with a zinc roof, providing mattresses and bedding, a cook stove, and connecting the home to electricity and water. Additional support will help them get kitchen supplies, clothes, and food to get back on their feet. Please consider supporting Candy and her boys as they recover from this devastating loss. Your generosity will give them hope and a fresh start. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a real difference in their lives.
