Candice Brooks is a devoted single mother of five, and she’s also my family. Four of her children, ranging from 15 years old to just one year, live with her. Over the past year, Candice has faced unimaginable challenges. She’s been a victim of abuse, and despite promises of support from victims’ advocacy, she hasn’t received any funds. Recently, she lost her job, and although she’s already secured another, there’s been a delay in her start date.

Last week, Candice’s electricity was disconnected. The utility company has placed a switch hold, requiring a significant payment to restore service. With no help available from local agencies or organizations, and after calling everywhere from churches to United Way and 211, we’ve been told there are simply no funds in Harris County. The family is now losing the food they have in their refrigerator and freezer, and at this point, they may not even have a Christmas. There are no gifts under their tree, and the stress is overwhelming for Candice, who works so hard to provide for her children.
