Help Candace walk with Bioness L300

May 7, 2010 was the day that my life changed forever. I was 16 years old, speeding home to beat curfew when I over-corrected, flipped and went into an embankment. This mistake was nothing temporary, as it left me with a brain injury to the frontal lobe, multiple broken ribs, punctured lungs, a floating shoulder, and multiple fractures to my spine which gave me an incomplete spinal cord injury. During my time in the shock trauma unit, I was placed in an induced coma, my blood went septic and I received several blood transfusions. However, the injury to my spinal cord is what affected me the most. The spinal cord controls everything; Bowel, bladder, body temperature, motor function, and most of the nervous system. As previously stated, I also injured my frontal lobe that controls motor function. My spinal injuries left me with paralysis from the chest down. By the grace of God, I was able to regain movement in my left leg within the first year. Unfortunately my right side wasn't so fortunate. Among horrible muscle spasms, back pain and insecurities, I have struggled with severe drop foot on the right side. Because of this I've walked with a cane for the last 9 years using a custom AFO to support my foot. My AFO prevents me from breaking my foot but is incapable of lifting the toes when walking. By me not not having the proper bracing, it forces me to hip hike, better known as "limping" so that I can clear my foot without tripping and falling. From walking incorrectly for so long, it has not only caused injury to my hips but also more injury to my back. The scariest part of it all, is that if I continue walking the way that I do, my physical therapist predicts me to need a mobility chair within the next 10 to 15 years. Due to my disability, I'm only able to work part time, I'm also single and the only parent to a five year old little boy. I want nothing more than to have physical freedom and to be more active with my son. All of these reasons are what brings me to this page. There is a device called the Bioness L300 that will not only help me walk better today but will also prevent me from causing further injury in the future. The bioness cost $6,300 and the electrodes that communicate with the device are an additional $300, which includes a year's supply. This device will help me walk more naturally with greater speed, regain confidence and stability, and more importantly, I can be more active with my child. Once I am able to purchase the bioness I will undergo physical therapy to teach me how to properly walk and bare weight. If you've read this far, I can't express how much I appreciate your time. Any form of donation will be greatly appreciated. Below I've attached a link with more information regarding drop foot, spinal cord injuries and the device that I am trying to purchase. Thanks again for your time!
