On October 11, 2018, Cameron's life changed.
After a workout, he had head pain unlike any migraine he'd ever experienced. His neck was throbbing. He was violently ill. Luckily Cam was with a good friend who got him to Vancouver General Hospital. By the time he got there, he was screaming for help.
What happened?
Cameron was suffering from a brain aneurysm. It had burst - a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Less than 18 hours later, he was in life-saving surgery. Doctors performed a craniotomy, removing a portion of Cameron's skull to repair the brain bleed. His scalp was reconnected with 31 staples.
Given all this, it is amazing Cam is alive, let alone awake, communicating normally (and even cracking jokes, in true Cam style). While he is doing better than anyone could imagine, the post-surgery head pain is unbearable, and this is just the beginning of a long, unknown road to recovery.
Why we all love Cameron
One amazing thing about Cameron is his diverse talents and passions. Some of us know him as an incredible athlete. This makes it even harder to see his body so changed through this injury and recovery. Some of us know him for his amazing musicality. It's difficult to accept he's been in a very low sensory environment since this incident, and may well be for some time. We hope whatever support generated through this campaign can make Cam whole again, in body and mind, so he can once again share his passions with the world.
Cameron also has an insatiable appetite for adventure. There is so much more of the world left for him to explore.
Cameron is loving son, brother, nephew, grandson. He is a proud uncle and godfather. He is a loyal friend. If any of us were in trouble, we know Cam would have our back, doing anything he could to help.
What happens now
With a medical crisis, the outlook evolves and changes day-to-day. What we know now is that Cameron will need 6-8 weeks of intense, immediate rehabilitation. He will likely need ongoing rehab for an extended period thereafter.
The challenge
Cameron has a great seasonal job he enjoys, but he is laid off every winter. He loves his new part-time job at a bar in the West End, but it doesn't come with any extended health benefits. He does not have critical illness or disability illness insurance. As of now, Cam will not be working, indefinitely, and therefore not earning any income.
How you can help
Please give whatever you can to help support Cameron's recovery. Donations will be managed by his sister, Brittany. They will be used to fund whatever unknown health costs may arise.
On behalf of Cameron, and all of his family - thank you so much.
