Hey everyone! I'm Cameron Mukwa, an Indigenous graphic novelist who creates children's literature with a focus on Two Spirit and transgender experiences. My debut graphic novel, The Ribbon Skirt, was just published in November 2024 by Scholastic Graphix. I'm always looking to improve my skills and make more books that kids love to read!
Okay, that's great. But what do you need money for?
A few months back, I applied for the Alaska Robotics Comics Camp, which is a wonderful event put on by the people at Alaska Robotics and brings together comic artists across the globe for a retreat to connect with their peers and better understand their art, taking place in Southeast Alaska. I've heard first hand what a great career opportunity this professional development camp can be. There really isn't anything else like it. And amazingly, I was accepted to this camp! There's just one problem...
Getting to Alaska is super expensive. So here's the breakdown of my costs:
Camp costs: $800
Airline ticket: $700
Food: $100
I've set the goal to cover just camp itself and the airline ticket, but any additional would go towards food costs over the course of camp. If we go over that amount, I'll pass the remainder on to the folks running the comics camp, so that hopefully they can lower costs for other attendees. This is really important to me, and I will truly appreciate every cent donated!
