Dear Community,
My partner Cam is in immediate need of funding to fix their childhood home. Currently the house is unlivable due to the heavy concentration of mold from years of water damage. Because of the mold, Cam’s mental and physical health is in immediate danger.
Cam is a Japanese-American non-binary trans person, living in a gentrified neighborhood. I first met Cam a month after the passing of their beloved mother and best friend, Cheryl. They inherited their childhood home in a rapidly gentrifying (gentrified) Venice neighborhood and it has been a two year struggle to keep up with grieving their loss and attempting repairs with just the two of us. They have asthma and which gets worse the longer they stay in the home, increasing their risk of contracting COVID-19. For over a year now they have been couch surfing and living with me off and on due to the state of their home. Cam has been a major caretaker for a number of people in the past years, including their late mother, father, aunt, and uncle. They are currently taking care of their grandmother who had to have surgery on her ankle. They are the most loyal, sensitive, and loving person I know and they always come through for their family, friends, and myself.
Last year, Cam used the majority of their money to repair the roof to stop leaks and prevent further water damage but they have run out of money to make any further repairs. Although they had secured a job as an EMT in early April, they are currently unemployed due to an injury and have been looking for work to fund fixing their home.
With not many other places to turn, Cam’s loved ones and I are reaching out to our communities for help to fund this project. Any amount small or large would be much appreciated and go directly to securing safe and sustainable housing for Cam.
Our goal is to fumigate, remove mold, replace walls, and patch up water damaged ceilings and rodent entry holes before the start of winter. We plan to use the summer to make all necessary repairs before rain and rodent season. Funds will go directly to this project!
