I met Caleb, a bright and resilient 10-year-old boy, while working as a nurse at Post Acute Care of Willoughby. He came into the facility to visit his grandma, and the moment I saw his infectious grin from his wheelchair, my heart was touched. Over the next few days, I learned more about Caleb’s story—he lost both his parents, his father to suicide and his mother to an accidental overdose. Now, he lives with his grandparents, who have stepped up to care for him despite their own health challenges.
Caleb faces daily obstacles due to Spina Bifida and relies on a wheelchair for mobility. His grandparents do everything they can, but providing for all his needs is difficult. Caleb needs clothes, Depends, and assistance with food. Transportation is a challenge, as his grandpa lifts him in and out of the car, and a wheelchair lift and van would make a world of difference. Even small joys, like toys or video games—he loves WWF wrestling and was thrilled when I gave him a PS4—bring light to his days. His grandma and grandpa dream of taking him to a Captain’s baseball game in Willoughby, Ohio, to create happy memories together.
I believe in the power of community, and I’m reaching out to ask for your help. Whether it’s a donation, clothing, food, or simply sharing this story, every act of kindness matters. If you feel more comfortable donating items directly, my workplace is happy to accept drop-offs for Caleb and his family. Together, we can make a difference in Caleb’s life and show him he’s not alone. Thank you for opening your heart to this special boy and his loving grandparents.
