Meet Calamari. Our wonderful, sweet kitty that we adopted from our local shelter Spaymart.
I had to take Calamari to the animal hospital last night. She hasn’t been acting right: lethargic, didn’t move from one spot, huge distended belly, wouldn’t eat. I thought she was constipated.
I brought her in and she had a fever of 104. They told me to go to a different hospital because the wait was too long for her condition. I take her, they tell me it’s 105° fever now and that she has free fluid in her belly. They had to put a catheter in and kept her in the hospital over night
Ultimately they diagnosed her with Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). A mutation of the coronavirus that is usually fatal. It attacks her immune system. They gave me two option, there’s an experimental drug that just got legalized last year that has a pretty good success rate called GS-441524. That or we’d have to consider putting her down…
They called me this morning and she’s in the same condition. I reached out to the adoption agency I got her from and they’ve been super helpful. They are giving me a month worth of the experimental drug for free, we are gonna see if it works.
So for this has cost us over $1600, money that we don’t really have right now. The bill will ultimately come to a little over $2100 just for the hospital stays. Once Calamari (hopefully) finishes her month of injections we will need to continue this journey with oral medication which will cost hundreds.
It feels so weird to ask for help financially, but we want to be able to do everything we can to help our sweet girl. Please consider donating to help Calamari fight this horrible disease. Anything helps and we are so grateful. Thank you
