On July 31st, my father, retired Sergeant Eli Lugo, was involved in a bicycle accident that broke several vertebrae in his neck, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. He has been experiencing little victories since he has been an inpatient at the rehabilitation facility and as a family, we have faith that he will continue healing and have a full recovery soon.
Our insurance is not covering as much as we thought they would, so many costs are left to us. Equipment for bathroom usage, a power lift used for hoisting him from his wheelchair to his bed, and transportation from the rehab to any appointments from this point forward will not be covered. When he arrives home, outpatient therapy will take place five times a week, transportation will not be provided. To make the concept mentally tangible, the cost of one roundtrip is $640 upfront, or $1,040 if billed after a trip.
These are the only out-of-pocket costs we know of so far, we are almost certain that there will be new necessities down the line that insurance will deny us. In-home care will not be offered to us, so 100% of our time will go to assisting him and tending to his needs. We are making sacrifices as a family to dedicate ourselves to him; I am not attending university for a semester and my mother is working limited hours at her salon.
We are doing our very best to make ends meet, but any help at all would be tremendously appreciated. Eli is a friend, a brother, a mentor, and so much more to many people and a wonderful father and husband in our home. This is an incredibly humbling experience for us and seeing the fragility of the human body at such a close encounter is life changing.
My dad always said that he grew up with the Paterson Police Department and it's heartwarming to have received an outpouring of love and support since day one. The PBA is donating time, manpower, and supplies to make his bathroom accessible to him when he gets home and we are eternally grateful for that act of love and fraternity, especially after him giving 30 years of his life to the department.
My dad is known all around for his optimism, his humor, and his dimpled smile, and those are things the accident did not take away. We are humbly asking for any sized donation whoever comes across my message can give. Donations, or even just sharing this link, would help a lot.
