Help Nurse Martita Reach the Patients Who Need Her Most

In the rural hills of Nicaragua, access to healthcare isn’t something people can take for granted. For many families, the nearest government health clinic is miles away, and transportation simply doesn’t exist. When someone is sick, pregnant, or in danger, getting to care isn’t just difficult—it can be impossible.

That’s where Martita comes in.

Martita has been a nurse for decades, and she is one of the most deeply respected healthcare workers in the region. People know her not just for her skill, but for her heart. She believes, with absolute conviction, that everyone deserves care—no matter where they live or how hard they are to reach.

So, when patients can’t get to the clinic, Martita goes to them.
That means walking for hours in the blazing heat, through the woods, over dirt roads and riverbeds, carrying medical supplies on her back just to reach remote communities. She does this month after month because she refuses to let geography determine who receives care.
Recently, I had the chance to witness Martita’s work firsthand. I hope to become a doctor one day and wanted to better understand the realities of healthcare in underserved communities.

One day, Martita took me on a visit to a small community called El Zapote, one of the most remote areas she serves. She had heard about a woman with a high-risk pregnancy who had missed her appointment at the clinic.

When Martita reached her home, she discovered something alarming: the woman had been diagnosed at the hospital with a dangerous blood vessel complication during pregnancy—but she couldn’t afford the medication she had been prescribed.

That visit may have saved her life.

On that day, I was able to help provide transportation. But the truth is, if we hadn’t been there, Martita—at 52 years old—would have walked three hours each way to reach that patient.

And she would have done it without hesitation.

Martita is one of the kindest, most selfless people you could ever meet. She has dedicated her life to caring for others in communities where resources are scarce but the need is immense.
A truck would change everything.

With reliable transportation, Martita could reach more communities, respond faster to emergencies, and provide care more frequently—without risking her own health walking for hours under extreme conditions.

This fundraiser is to help purchase a truck that will allow Martita to continue her life-saving work and expand it to even more families who depend on her.

Healthcare should not depend on whether someone can walk for hours to find it.

Together, we can make sure Martita can keep showing up for the people who need her most.

Every contribution helps bring care closer to these communities.
