Butch is my 5-year-old cat, and I’ve loved him since I started fostering him at just 4 weeks old. He’s always been healthy, sleeping next to me every night and letting me carry him around like a baby. This is the first time he’s ever been sick, and it happened so suddenly. Today, Butch became very lethargic, and when I came home from work, he was lying in the same spot on the bed, eyes wide open, tongue hanging out, and gasping for air. I rushed him to the emergency vet, where they diagnosed him with a urinary mucus plug that prevented him from urinating. Because I have two other cats, I didn’t notice the problem right away, and the vet is unsure what additional damage may have been caused. Butch’s urine was full of blood and smelled strongly when they unplugged the blockage, and he’s now slowly improving with oxygen and fluids. Butch needs to stay hospitalized for three nights to stabilize, receive a catheter, injectable medications to protect his heart, and at-home meds to fight the severe infection caused by the blockage. I only have about half of the needed deposit to ensure he gets all the care required. If I can’t raise the rest, Butch will be sent home with only a 20% chance of surviving.
